BOTOX® Cosmetic Injection Sites: What Areas Can It Treat?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a popular injectable treatment that can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the face. Unfortunately, widespread misinformation and inaccurate media portrayals have left many individuals confused about where on the face you can actually get BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. This anti-wrinkle treatment should be administered only on the upper face to smooth out expression lines and creases.

Where Can You Get BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections?

If you are considering BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, it’s important to understand where the treatment can be safely applied. There are three injection sites for BOTOX® Cosmetic: the forehead, around the eyes, and between the brows. BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA-approved for the correction of facial wrinkles and fine lines in these areas only.

These specific areas of the face may be treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic because wrinkles in these locations are known as expression lines. Expression lines are caused by frequent nerve contractions from making facial expressions, and BOTOX® Cosmetic is specifically designed to counteract these lines. It works by blocking the nerve signals to the muscles to prevent them from contracting. This allows the skin to lie smooth even when smiling or frowning.

When injected into these areas, BOTOX® Cosmetic can smooth out:

  • Crow’s feet wrinkles at the corners of the eyes (also called “lateral canthal lines”)
  • Frown lines between the brows (also called “glabellar lines”)
  • Moderate to severe forehead lines and wrinkles

Where Should You NOT Get BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections?

Some individuals think that you can also get BOTOX® Cosmetic injected into the lower face, cheeks, mouth area, or even the lips, but this is incorrect. These other areas are usually treated with dermal fillers instead, and they are not FDA-approved for treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic. Only the three areas listed above (forehead, corners of the eyes, and between the brows) are approved for BOTOX® Cosmetic use in correcting signs of facial aging.

How to Tell If You Should Get BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections

If you have moderate to severe wrinkles or other signs of aging in the forehead, around the eyes, or between the brows, you may be a candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. You should schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to learn whether BOTOX® Cosmetic is the right treatment for you or whether you should consider another anti-aging treatment like dermal fillers or Venus Viva™ skin rejuvenation.
