Does Microneedling Really Work?

Microneedling is an increasingly popular skin rejuvenation treatment in which tiny punctures from micro-needles are used to tighten and refresh the skin. But does microneedling really work? Various authoritative sources cited below provide convincing evidence that microneedling is effective in tightening, firming, and rejuvenating damaged and aging skin.

Authorities Say YES!

Modern medical products like Venus Viva™ must be put through rigorous testing before they can be released to the general public. Medical products must be cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in order to be sold and marketed in the United States. Microneedling is an FDA-cleared treatment, which provides assurance that microneedling may be considered both safe and effective.

Additional authorities and scientific research also uphold the efficacy of microneedling. The American Academy of Dermatology issued a press release in 2018 stating that microneedling can “improve the appearance of large pores, fine lines and wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks.” ScienceDirect, a source of extensive peer-reviewed scientific research, also published a major study of microneedling literature in 2018. This study concluded that microneedling is a safe and effective therapy for scars and wrinkles, both as a standalone treatment and in combination with radiofrequency (which is how Venus Viva™ works). In fact, the study determined that microneedling was often preferred over other skin renewal treatments because it could yield similar results with a shorter downtime and minimal side effects.

How Microneedling Works

Since microneedling has been proven effective for skin renewal, the follow-up question then is, how? How does creating micro-injuries in the skin help to renew it? The answer is biology. The body responds to an injury by healing it, but sometimes this healing response results in a noticeable change to skin appearance (like an acne scar). Creating a new miniature injury in the same spot initiates a secondary healing response that can significantly improve the appearance of the skin. Since the injuries caused by the micro-pins are so tiny, they do not trigger the aggressive scarring that can sometimes happen with more extensive injuries.

Venus Viva™ microneedling also helps counteract skin damage that occurs slowly over time. Normally as the skin ages, collagen production decreases and the skin gradually wears down, leading to wrinkles, enlarged pores, and skin sagging. Stimulating the skin with radiofrequency energy waves causes immediate skin contraction as well as new collagen formation, which enables the skin to continue to renew itself over time. The result is that the skin looks progressively smoother, tighter, firmer, and younger.

Venus Viva™ Microneedling

Venus Viva™ combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to rejuvenate the skin. The radiofrequency energy, which is used in a wide range of skin rejuvenation treatments, causes immediate skin contraction and continuing skin renewal over time. The matrix of micro-pins (microneedling) is then used to puncture the skin, triggering the biological healing response. These two strategies work together to produce immediate and ongoing skin rejuvenation, with minimal risk of side effects and very little downtime.

The REAL Question – Do I Use It Myself?

Patients always ask- “Dr. Aycock, what do YOU use on your skin?”  My go to regimen is Retin-A, sunscreen at all times, a good eye cream and moisturizer, Botox every few months and Viva RF microneedling every 2-3 months.  Even my husband, who never notices anything, says I look very glowy afterwards.  It is minimal discomfort and I just look a little pink for about 2 days afterwards- here’s a pic of right after doing the treatment on myself.

Countless individuals who have received Venus Viva™ microneedling skin rejuvenation treatments witness firsthand that this treatment does indeed work for skin renewal. Depending on the individual, desirable results may be achieved in as little as one treatment up to three or four treatment sessions.
